I am patient, but unsure how to proceed. I was fairly familiar with the classic tesla coil design and rushed off to purchase a NST, 12kV 30ma, but my education in your various sites has opened my eyes to the elegance and efficiency of the SISG setup. Plus I have a photo etching business and would like to make some coolio bus-bar type designs out of .040 brass. Of course, the money for IGBTs is a consideration, and I'm avoiding the DRSSTC because I don't even know how to hook up a scope. Expense is one thing, but blowing up expensive parts to learn is a REAL drag.

So now I have a ton of voltage, and I would need many HV IGBTs (expensive) to handle switching that. OR.... I am getting two microwaves and could end up with a lower primary voltage, but higher amperage. (Is that right?)

I also have two 50 amp Solid State Relays from the heater setup on my etching tank, Power-IO HDA-6V50 http://www.power-io.com/products/hda.htm Their data sheet says their surge current, 1 sine wave is 625 A. (pdf here:http://www.power-io.com/library/databulletin/h-family-75.pdf)
EDIT: Their max turn on time is 1/2 sine wave.

Are these useable for a tesla coil project? Should I change course from SGTC to SSTC? I've read that formerly when SSTC was not "DR" that mosfets were used for switching. First off I don't even know that these ARE mosfets, so correct me, but if they are or not I'd appreciate an education on their usefulness.

I'm not after the biggest sparks in the world, something bright to impress my friends, let's be honest. :)

Well you should definitely start with sgtc. I mean there are so many ways! You can use an mot using ac,using dc resonant charging, use neon transformers, pole pigs, potential transformers, and oil burner ignition transformers.with arsg srsg or static spark gap. Also they are more reliable and cost less in the long run. And they are very easy to put together easy.i am 14 and i know exactly how to make one!i have even made a rotary spark gap!

If you want to get started in TC's I would suggest contacting EVR for a kit. That way you can't really go wrong, and there's some margin of safety involved.

If you don't know your way around electronics yet I would definately advise you stay away from all things lethal like MOT's and pole pigs. Getting into lethal high voltages right away is a recipe for disaster or worse.

Or check out Steve Ward's mini coils. He has some very simple minimalistic DRSSTC designs that are great for the beginner.

I built a kit when I got into guitar amps, but found the experience mostly rote. Of course it's the best way to go if all you want is the amp itself. The DRSSTC would at this point be the same for me, whereas the SISG is just at the edge of my current understanding. (no pun intended)

To that end I bought 16 pieces of HGTG27N120 from Ebay, $55 to my door. They're 200A (pulse), 72A continuous rated, 1200V, 500W dissipation, and seem to my highly untrained eye to be quite suitable. I compared specs to the parts specified in the schematics and mine are not quite as beefy, with a little shorter rise time, but a longer fall time, 80 versus 45.
