Just thought I'd let the people in the western US know that the aurora is pretty cool tonight its not too often that I can see it here in Traverse City, Michigan, but tonight I noticed it while driving home and have been watching it for a while- tonight and this coming Thursday are supposed to be decent nights, so if the weather is clear and you can stay up late, take a peek! I've only seen them a couple times from my house, so I figure they must be a little more active then normal now Good Luck!! Eric

I took this picture 10 days ago. The sun has just started on a new 11 year solar cycle and has been very active lately. The predictions are that it will be more active this cycle than for quite some time.

I have seen wonderful aurora in Finnmark and Svalbard, but only once in Britain, when I was walking in the Cairngorm mountains of Scotland in the winter. The aurora were not overhead, as one can sometimes see them in Norway, but very low in the northern sky, as if they were happening much further to the north.

Thats how they are for me, too, Harry- but its still a great surprise and they're still amazing to me!! When I went to Iceland and the northern part of Norway, the northern lights were Amazing! Unlike anything I have ever seen down here on the 45th parallel, thats for sure!

The aurora I remember from the north of Norway were all the lime-green colour a bit like uranium glass, but at Spitsgergen in Svalbard in the winter I saw other colours too - great pulsing waves and ribbons of light edged with red and crimson which I believe occur at a lower altitude than the more common lime-green displays. I have heard it said that when it is very still, and the aurora is very strong, that a hissing sound may be heard, but I did not experience this myself. Sights of a lifetime!

Cool pic, Bjoern.
I've only seen an aurora once, and it was just a little fleeting bit of it. I'd love to see a fullblown one, though I'm not really quite north enough for that. With all the increased solar activity it should open up more chances to see them, though, so I'm hopeful.
