Hello, I have build a spark gap coil 4" diam 24" high coil 9 1/2 turns primary, single MOT and 1a variac. I am not after power anymore, but efficacy.

That is why I am going to "try" and build a DRSSTC, I know all about the theory of operation and have tried a solid state coil but failed miserably.
Now I need help, I think I know why, because the mosfets I used were rated for 4a, 400v, the mosfets can't Handel the amper fluctuation.

So now I am asking anyone who knows a good igbt that can handle the power from a 240v 1a variac. I am going to use a half bridge.

Perhaps these will do??? Link2

Also, For my DRSSTC I am going to use the same Primary Coil, Secondary Coil and tank capacitor, as it is tuned.
Would this be alright? Or do I need a complete rethink?

Thank you in advance,

Plasma.

I am going to make this circuit, just as a half bridge and using these IGBTs.

Link2
Will they work?

Ok guys, here is some infomation...

"Insulated gate bipolar transistor with ultrafast soft recovery diode. VCES = 600V, VCE(on)typ. = 1.65V @ VGE = 15V, IC = 27A in 3-pin TO-247AC package. Operational temperature range from -55°C to 150°C."

This is the IGBT I am looking to buy, is 27A to low? Keep in mind i am using a 1A 0-249v variac.

Thanks again.

Ok, I would also like to know how to build the Current Transformer?

I have no Idea.

Any help would be great.

I would take a look at Austin's thread on the Minibrute.
He has Dan and Wirenut as well as the rest of the veterans of DRSSTC's going on a good design.
They also discuss several IGBT's.

Would be a good read.

Uh,, yeah... thanks, but that still dose not help me, does anyone have first hand experience here?
My main worry is that 27a IGBTs are to low and will blow when the Tank circuit gets going..

I am going to roughly follow this guide here Link2 by Steve Ward, the "master".

The only deference is my power for the controller circuit will be slightly lower powered, and the diodes will follow suite. And the power input for the power electronics will be 1a 240v variac.

Also, can the controller circuit in the link above be assembled on a strip board? Or do you need to do some etching?

And yeah,, I know this is the worlds most newbish Question, but no point in not knowing! What the heck are them li'll arrows or "triangles on the circuit board??? they are everywhere, but to name a few, on the bottom of "D2" "C2" "C14" "74HC109N pin 8" and "UCC37321 pin 4" on both U3 and U4.
I think they are ground, no? which would mean that all them triangles would be connected together.
Thank you in advance.

worry about the igbt's pulsed current rating not continuous. Almost any Igbt can be used in a coil you'll just have to use good judgment on what they can handle. Or just try them.

You can assemble any DRSSTC or SSTC circuit by hand, no need for etching. Just keep wires thick and short as possible on the power devices.

Man,, thak you very much!

Do you have any familiarity with the circuit I gave a link to? you know anything about the "triangles"?

Thanks again!
