I hope I didn't sound like it's an inconvenience to help you. I love helping beginners with this kinda stuff. I guess personally, I prefer trying to figure out as much as I can on my own before I ask for help. I usually learn a lot more than I set out for, instead of just the answer to the one single question I had. Anyways, get some pics of your project when you get it working!

Most ac line powered projects can be initially tested after low power tests, visual checks etc. have been done by putting a filament/incandescent bulb/lamp rated for line use, in series with the line and your equipment. use wattage similar to your equipment or 10W to 100W. (i.e. 115Vac/230Vac or whatever your country uses)
It gives a good level of protection from simple faults and is a good indicator, it limits fault current. Almost any line-powered kit can be tested like this, A multiplier is certainly better checked like this as the lamp will extinguish once the charging is complete.
