hi all,
starting to get the bits together for my first drsstc. i am planning on using cm600.s as they seem to be cheap and plentifull. the data sheet says 25 khz max. i was planning on 45 khz or there abouts. will the cm 600,s be ok at that speed or should i try and find something a bit faster.? i have lots of 23 awg gauge wire i want to use so that is the limiting factor really. dont want to go to a smaller gauge if i can help it. i have ordered 60 cde492 caps as well. what size bleeder resistors should i get for those? still thinking about the gate drive. does anyone know of a good source for the filter caps. still reading though the archives at the moment. sorry if this has been answered a 100 times already. i am a slow reader, and i keep going off at tangents.
cheers

you are definately going to need a faster igbt i am assuming around ~100khz and the best and cheapest source for filter caps is ebay and you might want to double or triple that 23 awg wire because a drsstc can draw ALOT of current and those wires may turn into fuses if you are not careful. for the bleeders i would go with 10mohm at 1W across each cap.

I wouldn't recommend using Cm600's or similar for your first DRSSTC unless you already have lots of experience with SSTCs. Thing is that the CM600's require a pretty specialized gate drive circuit which typically has its own isolated power supply to drive it (on the high side) there are also a lot of other nuances which are required when using high power CM600's vs. "regular" DRSSTCs.

I'd strongly recommend checking out Steve Ward's mini DRSSTCs and starting there. You don't need the SOT-227 bricks - the TO-247 types work just fine and are cheaply and readily available.

hi teslacool guy,
thanks for your concern about the wire. i should have pointed out that i meant to say the 23 awg is for the secondary,it was 2.am when i posted:-)).
Dan,
i haven't built a sstc but have built plenty of big sgtc,s i also have some experience of h bridge inverters so hopefully that should help. one of the reasons i want to build a big drsstc is to get some practice with high power h bridge circuits for another project i am working on. i figure if it works with a Tesla coil it will work anywhere. bit like Terry's cap testing experiments with the mmc,s. plus at 6 dollara a piece cm600,s are cheap enough to experiment with, as long as i dont fry evrything else of course. waiting for your book to arrive which hopefullly will answer most of my questions. i am assumeing ringing and snubbing will give me the most headaches?
regards

It's definitely possible running CM600s at 40-60kHz in a DRSSTC, Christopher Hooper has done it. The gate drive can be a bit tricky though, as Dan said.

The datasheet specs 25kHz as max switching because that is based on hard switching. With a DRSSTC running properly with primary feedback, you are essential soft switching and therefore can push the switching frequency up.
I've run CM600's well over 100kHz in DRSSSTCs.

Where are you getting these $6 CM600s? I've been looking to get my hands on a few of them for awhile.
