Mosfet failure prevent.

I realize this topic has been ever so slightly discussed, mostly with people saying, "use less voltage" or "use a CT" stuff like that, but I would like to get some feedback from you guys as to ways to prevent or at least greatly reduce the chances of mosfet failure while operating a tesla coil. This is of particular interest since after making Steve Wards mini coil, Link2, and having the mosfets fail due to bad signal from the antenna, and then recently replacing the antenna with a triad CT, Link2, and still getting mosfet failure when ever I switch the interrupter to high bps. So then the question is, What would be good ways of reducing or eliminating mosfet failure?

you need to control the current using a current sense transformer. This way it will automatically kill the pulse if current gets too high.

So then short of adding an OC circuit or say adding the mur860's, I really don't have many other options?

Avi and EastVoltReserch are boath right. I have had the same problem and have spent hundreds. A lot of these guys run fets outside the safe operating area. you could use a chepper fet or a bigger fet wich is going to be my next choise. yuo might try a more stable design like a DRSSTC good luck.

you can use an electronic fuse, this is basically the over current protection and you would need one additional transistor (mosfet).

Is it practical to use all the suggestions given so far? Such as using a fast recovery diode like mur860 Link2 , and a tvs like Link2 or should I use a lower voltage tvs, and What rating zeners on G-S 33v?

you should use 12-15v zeners (i have not seen a 33v gate on a mosfet yet)
