A quickie project as I wanted a meter I could read in the dark for my cap bank. (Never posted a project here before)
A commercial LED unit rated to 19.99 volts runs 5V from a 5v regulator from a NiCd pack. Input is from a 30kV rated handheld unit of 1000MOhm to 1.1MOhm. Meant to run 10MOhm load which the meter provides.
It is made in a "Heaven" coffee tin.
For what it is worth, I have a .01 cap and a neon bulb to bypass spikes. There is a coil on an unspecified toroid core in the input lead to the meter. Maybe it will help.

I think the fibreoptics would make a counter bulletproof if long enough. I have some and I planned to give it a go on my small TC. Worked on 5 different projects today so fairly busy.
For camera protection for my previous digicam and videocam I had a metal can about the size of a tissue box as a Faraday cage. For really close sparks I would use that but I don't have the equivalent for my SLR,
The LED meter reads reliably close to my analogue meter (perhaps 5%) to give some reassurance. The probe goes to 30 kV but I could extend that if needed but it really just was added to run my big cap bank at full capacity with remote monitoring.
