i recently got 4 NST's from a friend of mine but they're protected against open circuit and earth leakage. they're Resinblocks from F.A.R.T. neon. the specs are:
4000/25 6000/25 8000/25 8000/25
the idea was to put the two 8kV ones in parallel to get 8000/50. this way i could use them to test my cap and primary without having to worry about frying them since i have another 8000/50 lying around. the problem is that the protection is making them shut down after a (very)little while as you can see on this video: i thought that removing the protection devices would solve the issue but it didn't, it simply stopped the gap from running at all :S this probably means i have to bridge some of the connectors that the device was connected to but i don't know which ones. has anyone got experience with this? can i mess it up real bad when i connect them the wrong way around?
update: i found this pic on the manufacturers website but i can't really see if i should connect 3 to 5 or 6. the same goes for 4...

I wasn't able to determine much information from the website. I think its just a core and coil from looking at their test circuit. And the little block that's getting removed is their protective switch to limit open circuit voltage or current when a tube dies. If this is all it does, then the transformer should operate without it. What you might have though is a transformer that has gone open circuit, you'll need to do a resistance check on the secondary to ground on each side while the power is off to make sure the coils are still good. Your cap might have been 'too much' for the NST, which yes I have done before, sometimes it happens.
I'm not real sure about their protection setup here. What I was doing is just bypassing the GFCI in the box type NST. And really, the NST works normally with the GFCI, so you know, sometimes we have to experiment a little and see what works.
