Hi all,
Does anyone know what this object is?
It seems to consist of a tall slender metal pole with a silver dome on top, that has a small nipple in the centre at the top. There are three of them in Newcastle (England) all within 1/4 mile of each other. Two are on top of University owned buildings, one of which is the tallest building for miles around. The third one (pictured here) is on the roof of a low lying theatre building right next to the previously mentioned tall building.

I'd say thats a little far fetched.
With an antenna of that size, you're talking about an effective passive receiver for signals <10cm in wavelength, and an effective active detection system for wavelengths far shorter than that. Never mind the fact that the domes appear to be solid metal. Not especially useful for radars and the like.
There is an almost identical network here at Robins AFB. They are in fact lightning detectors. Nice things to have when you've got a 100 acre concrete slab surrounded by 90' stadium lights.
There are a number of other possibilities. Radiation detectors (highly unlikely in this case, but on a military base more plausible), Lightning protection, etc.
