marx gen question

very simple question, but i've just been wondering, what happens if the main gap is too big? I would think that it sent the final voltage through 1 side's worth of resistors back to the charger, destroying it, but is that realistic?

I think my marx does that...
because when I was powering it off a battery the switch would shock me almost every time it fired!

the Hv0 pin on my flyback would arc to the core and the core would arc to the primary and you get the idea.

but the flyback driver never died(FYI it was the zvs driver)

I solved the shocking problem by using a AT computer power supply, but the Hv0 pin still arcs.

another question: do you even really need the resistors? I know you need the main charging resistor, but do you really need 2 between each stage?

If the resisters weren't there you would just be discharging all the caps across one gap and make a very loud BANG!


EDIT: the resisters stop this from happening and the spark gaps connect all the caps in series
multiplying the voltage by the number of stages.

The capacitors will just charge up to the voltage of the HV supply. If your HV supply can supply more voltage than the capacitors can withstand you have a problem.

I have a ZVS driven Marx generator capable of developing 300kV.
So far I have never had a catastrophic failure if it is fired with the main gap set to large, Though a massive amount of corona appears at the HV terminal, with some leaders (a little like a single shot tesla coil).

The charging resistors should withstand the impulse, if they can each handle each stage voltage, but this doesent rule out cumulative damage.
