Interesting. I have a few of these :) so if you want some, PM me.

I've burned plastic using the laser from an early Philips DVD writer, the new ones being higher speed should be more powerful.

the diodes I have with markings seem to say 100mW, however a couple have no end windows (!) but still lase. I have no idea why they'd do this but perhaps it has to do with the diode being fairly small (0.4mm end window)

another idea might be to make a DVD message writer using a row of LD's pre focussed and drive them using calibrated current pulses. Fine pattern control could be done using a stepper motor to move the diode row 1/2 a diode-diode width.

There is a computer controlled laser writer that uses a DVD diode, I think I found the link on the forum somewhere. If I am not mistaken it was a Polish page so check the homepages of the Polish members and it will probably turn up.

It just occurred to me why I wasn't seeing the speckled pattern before. You tend to shine it on white paper to get the brightest spot but the fluorescence means you lose the coherence. Each fluorescent photon is emitted in a random direction not all "in step" like the laser.
Of course, red and green lasers speckle on paper as they are not fluorescent.
Sometimes I am a bit slower than my usual.

And the DVD writer laser. Hmmm. Might pop in to some electronic stores to see if I can score a few.

Its cheaper to manufacture. A lot of optical pickups are quite resistant to dust ingress so a lot of manufactures, dont even enclose the diode in a can!
I have seen some modern CD pickups, (low power diodes) wheremost of the enclosure for the laser diode itself, is manufactured from plastic! Uuugh!

I too have been experimenting with Blu-ray and DVD burner diodes. Your diode, going by the first picture most likely has COD (catastrophical optical damage). When you think they are dead, try giving them abit more current, some Blu-Ray diodes can still be used even once they are COD, but just get hot quicker and output is less. I am now in the process of getting a 6X Blu-ray burner drive, apparently you can get 70mw+ from these diodes. laserpointerforums contains a fair bit about blu-ray diodes, as well as output graphs, video's and even Group buys on them. These diodes are pretty sensitive, but once you see the colour you will be hooked smile

I took this pic today.
From left to right, Fluorescein, tonic water and Rhodamine then onto paper.
