Really interesting subject.
After playing around with Flybacks for some time now, I always directly electrically earth the return winding.
I use a 1M long length of extra flexible green cable, fitted to it's very own seperate 13 mains plug, the end of which is soldered directly to the return pin on the F/B.
A chicken stick with a direct earth return on the end, is much safer than holding a floating electrode.
As an extra, a piece of metal shim wedged down the side of the core and soldered directly to the return pin / earth cable, greatly reduces the chance of internal arcing :
