Hello, I'm new to the forums for the most part (although I have looked around and read a lot) and I am making my first SGTC (medium-small 9kv NST) and I have a question about grounding it. Since I don’t feel like sticking a 5+ft pole in my yard I was wondering if 5+ smaller 1ft poles connected together would work just as well. Also I haven’t seen very much information on RFI filters. I am wondering if an RFI filter is needed and how much protection it would provide.

yes 5 small poles ahould work just fine just make sure they are spaced about 1ft apart and for the rfi filter if you are using a nst mot or obit i strongly recommend it as it will make your transformer last longer and to build one just get some 1/2" pvc and wind 28awg about 5-6" and that should do the trick

Hi Firebird! There's no simple answer to your question because so much will depend on the conductivity of the ground. Under some circumstances, five short earth spikes might provide a better earth than one long one, but in other conditions it might not.
If you live in a hot, dry place, chances are the top layer of soil will be quite dessicated, and conduct only poorly, so your short rods would not reach the moist, more conductive earth beneath.
Soil conductivity is almost exclusively of an electrolytic nature due to the salts dissolved in the water that impregnate and concentrate on the surface by an adherence phenomenon to the sand grains and the earth's clay.
You can improve the performance of your earth enormously by mixing lots (kilos)of salt into the soil surrounding your earth electrode/s, and sprinkling water over it in dry weather.

Thanks again for the quick replies. The conductivity will not be that big of a problem for me because it is just normal soil I would be placing the earth ground in.

A bunch of smaller rods will also make it more portable, since you won't have to get a sledge hammer and pound in an 8 foot rod everywhere you want to show off the coil. Just push them all in and pull 'em right back out when you're done.
