I was wondering if anyone knows a good reciepe for some kind of ballistics gel that i can make with easily avaliable products. I am planning to use it to test various projectiles from a coilgun to see how lethal they are.

Yea, something make me think that human flesh is a bit tougher than jell-o.
If you had a bunch of it, you could just fire a projectile of known energy into it (bb gun), then compare that to how far the same projectile would go in ballistics gel.

Ballistics gel is indeed just gelatin. It has higher strength than regular jell-o, but I guess you could try a thick batch. You should look around and see if you can get bulk gelatin somewhere.

I tried making some out of old jell-o a year or so ago and it never seems to really work, the jell-o just doesnt get very thick and you end up with undissolved grains of it. As thick as I could get it a 1/4" steel ball at 30mph still went thorugh the entire 12" block. I remember mythbusters' shop till you drop special had some instructions on making it.

one pound of gelatin to one gallon of water mix till it has the consitency of grits or oatmeal pour into container put in refrigerator for two hours then pull out put over a pan of hot water not exceeding 120 degrees until the gelatin melts use thermometer and stir slowly minimise air. Air is your enemy through the whole process pour melted mix into mold container thats presprayed with silicone for easy block removal and chill it in the fridge for 48 hours prior to use then take it out for your testing. This is the way we have made it for over ten years. Also remember you can always add more gelatin this will make it even harder so you can get multiple shots if your testing say a spud device that shoots a large projectile just remember air bubbles are the enemy so stir slowly and carefully. Take your time it will come out right.
