Not having any experience in this subject, can anyone describe what chatter sounds like?
Chatter may or may not make a noise. Chatter is a term used for describing a wavy surface formed from your cutting tool. The cause of chatter may be machine vibration, tool speed, tool feed rate, cutting lubricant or coolant type, temperature, or lack of such.

Like Capper said, chatter doesn't always make a noise. Chatter often occurs with a negative rake tool on a hard material without lubrication. You can see the result of chatter in the chip formation. The chips will not be nice and curly and continuous. They'll be discontinuous, rough, and uneven. Of course with a brittle material like brass, all of the chips will be discontinuous, but that's not necessarily a sign of chatter.

Do you have any pics of your mill?
Can you post some specs. too? I'm going to have to get something to replace my dad's press which he's stealing back. I had an xy table on it, but I'm going to upgrade to a mill as soon as my paychecks start coming in.
