I was going to attempt this but getting there is a real problem.
1. Just got my Welch 1400 rebuilt $500 2. Have 3 Veeco oil diffusion pumps, donated but can cost up to $1000 each 3. Still need diff. oil $$250 ish 4. Absolute must have a cold trap, donated but those run $600 5. I have some KF flanges, but I need some more for the pump cart. 6. Need to fabricate pump cart! That's gonna cost money and a lot of welding time. 7. Vacuum gauges. I have a Magnetron gauge tube and some TC gauges, to get there, well, that is a major hurdle, check college or you're going to be dropping a LOT of money. 8. Kovar. Need Kovar to join glass to the pump cart. 9. 4 Poppet valves of course with very high conductivity. Need a good open path for the vacuum line. 10. Very hard to get a good length of 1" ID vacuum hose!!! 12' minimums and $130 smackers for that!! ouch! Check college again. 11. Misc hardware, elbows, joints, KF clamps... very expensive there 12. Tungsten wire for sealing into glass. 13. UO glass for graded seals for tungsten into pyrex, hard to find, somewhat expensive. 14. Getters!!! You must have getters from someone to do this, I don't have any yet, but I know of a few places to contact. 15. Spot welder for tube components. Gotta make that yet. 16. Etching solutions and plating solutions, and electropolishing solutions. 17. Vacuum electronics books. Hard to find. Fred Rosebury.
It's a pretty good sized list, and it goes on for quite a bit.

well if anyone has all the equipment to do it and wants some free homemade triodes just let me know and you can have them for free...just pay for the shipping!

Don't get all down about it, lad! All of us are limited in what we can spend, what tools and instruments we have, what parts we can afford to buy, and what we can't.
Part of the fun of experimenting is to ask yourself what you can make with the bits you've got, what you can scrounge in a junk yard, what can be salvaged from old domestic appliances, and so on.
Why not have a go at the zinc negative resistance oscillator, and tell us all how you got on?
