I have been tweaking my mini DRSSTC (got a nice spun topload for it) and have run into some problems. I swaped out the 30N60A4D IGBTS with some 40N60A4 IGBTs. While I was tuning, the coil just stopped working. It didnt blow the 15A fuse feeding the bridge rails, and upon further inspection I blew only one IGBT. How could I only blow one? Something is fishy here. I never had a problem with the 30N60s and now this has happended twice. Any ideas?

Suggestions to verify:
-zenners on the gates
-driver chips
-the by-pass diode across the blown IGBT.

Do you have snubber capacitors on the power input to the bridge?Adequate gate drive?

Blowing one IGBT is the one atypical mode of failure. However, be warned, that if you blow one IGBT, the others may test out okay, but still be damaged and weakened.

Typically, if one IGBT fails, i replace all IGBTs within the full-bridge, otherwise you may get a damaged / weakened one that will fail right away again leading others to get damaged / weakened. Its a never ending cycle unless you replace all at the same time.

Also, WHY did you swap the 30N60's for the 40N60's? The 30N60's will work just as well as the 40N60's. We use them both interchangeable with no loss in performance or reliability between the two devices for this application.

Thanks EVR. I think thats what it is. I am going to go through the whole bridge replacing everything. I know the control and gate drive electronics are working fine.
I used the 40N60A over the 30N60A becasue thats all I have. What I thought was a big bag 30N60's was really a big bag of 40N60s :-@ I will report back with the results.
Will
