If its a DRSSTC, you can use the pulsewidth to vary output power. However, you'll most likely need an inrush limiter as well so you don't bang on the caps too hard when they charge up for the first time.

Steve Connor has a nice circuit for a solid-state variac. I have not built it myself but have heard only good things. His site is scopeboy.com, but appears to be down right now.

Variac is cheap,60 bux at my local electronics shop.
I know that 60 bux might seem expensive to some, but hey, we have one of the more expensive hobbies.

$100.00 for caps.
$100.00 for NST.
$60.00 for a variac.

Coil not on fire, priceless. . . .

Always check the local university. They're always throwing stuff out! Especially the 50 year old stuff that is built to last forever. See if you can befriend the major people who do repairs for the labs, help build power supplies for demos like flyback supplies for Crooke's tubes or discharge tubes (That's how I got my foot in the door) and you're off and running!

You'd be surprised. They throw away vacuum pumps because for 50% more they can buy a new one rather then rebuilding. They throw away power supplies because a cap is dead and its blowing fuses. All that kind of thing that we know how to fix. So give that a shot if you can, its totally worth it.

I found this circuit on the Internet, and I found interesting, is a variac electronic, uses a SCR, but the way that there is for DC, I modify it to be either as AC DC.

Any suggestions?

Th

This is the schematic I was going to use for my tesla coil, ignor the bridge rectifier if you want AC out. I never got around to making it yet, so I can't say how well it works but others have made it, its from some TI application notes IIRC.
