Just curious how many of you have used wood for primary supports. Let me know your experiences.
I personally never use wood, and never will for my own coils, but i have a few demonstration coils i need to have some students build, and by using wood makes things much much simpler for them. If it can hold up a few runs, thats all that matters.

My first TC had wooden primary supports; just 3/8" plywood. Being an HV noob, I didn't bother to varnish it. It arced to the secondary a few times, developed a carbon track, and that was the end of it. Now I use chopped up cutting boards.

Ive tried wood and it was a pain if you try and drill holes to seat the turns in. The wood falls apart when drilling the holes, you cant put the turns to close together. I suppose if it was a really hard wood it might work better.

I'd say it all depends on the type of wood used. Using soft wood or glue impregnated wood like chipoard or ply wouldn't be too good. I think a nice dry hardwood would be good. Or I'm not Edward Woodward!

There's an OMG magnifier somewhere which uses varnished kiln-dried Sitka Spruce for the primary/secondary pair, though I don't recall what it uses for the magnifier coil.

My guess is that first Nicola Tesla's coils were made of wood. At least I've seen some of his replicas made of wood. I would use definitely some good epoxy or acrylate coating...
