in old monitors / tv's the curcuits that the flybacks use stock make prety good arcs.
i was thinking that you whould pop the monitor/tv open carefully remove the screen
and put the cucuit board in an enclosure and your done i'll try this soon and post the results

Remember, the curcuit is designed to output continuous voltage that doesn't drop much under normal use, so if you use it for drawing arcs, it won't live too long. The transistor will probably pop in first few minutes of arc drawing fun dead

Will running a X ray tube count as drawing an arc? Will that kill it?

mistrust

depends on how much power the tube is set to operate at. A CRT is basically the same thing as an x-ray tube, just a lot bigger and designed to prevent getting out instead of producing them. In fact my monitor says how much x-rays it produces on the back amazed.

i have finished it and i drew arcs for a while and it didint burnout
but when i used it to make a plasma ball effect in a xenon flash tube\
i didint leave a gap between the hv out and the tube
and i guess it didint supply enough resistance and acted like a short
the next thing i notice somthing smells like burnt marshmellows
and it stoped working

Thats odd, I guess I was unlucky with the monitors I had. The first one I took apart had some sort of GFI that made it cut out when I drew arcs. The other popped something instantly when I tried to draw an arc. It just made a soft clicking sound as some relay on the board snapped on and off. Oh, well. I guess that's what the ZVS is for frown

This one is even more ready-made, not that I'm giving it my recommendation. HV from a living monitor.

^haha! very technical! (is is me or did i see that on amazing1?)

yeah i've tried to use the standard monitor flyback driver as my first flyback experiment...ahh i remember thoes days...well anyway as soon as i drew an arc the transistor made a high pitch squeeling noise. i dont know how long it would have lasted but that noise almost made my head explode.

tryusing a single transistor driver or the ZVS (im lazy and i built it) most of the parts can be found right in the monitor/tv (diodes, caps, resistors...)
