Hi all, I received a "Cenco High Voltage Source" today. What exactly have I stumbled upon? And is it tesla coil compatable? The input is 115V 50-60 cycles 25 Amp. Output is "1/2 to 1 1/2 inch pulsating DC spark." Thats what it says right on the unit. When plugged in it creates about 10 hz pulsing arcs across the two connectors at the top of the unit. Very Loud.

1200967644 1195 FT0 0121081840a

The bottom picture is what I see when I open the bottom of the unit. It seems like there are two small coils, 3 AC caps, and underneath the circuit board (in the wooden part of the case) there is a large transformer.

The thing that I'm not so sure on is the "DC" aspect and the slow frequency. The Unit does not give any more information on the output other than arc length.

Let me know what you think. Or if you'd like some more info.

Thats most likely 25mA, not 25A or maybe even 0.25A.

Well, in the first pic I can see its labeled "Solid-State Induction Coil." Plus, I think I can also make out a single power semiconductor in pic #3, just above the right coil. My guess would be that its a nicely boxed iggy coil driver, but without an "iggy coil" per se.

Not to sound...ignorant... but whats an iggy coil? And any ideas what I could do with this thing? I have an almost built tesla coil (minus appropriately sized caps and a NST...it popped). I was hoping this thing could replace my NST. Any chance of that happening? I'm still not really sure what I've got here.

And it really does say "115V 50 60 CYCLE 25 AMP."

You can't power a tesla coil off this thing. For starters it is too low power, not more than a few watts. Second, the output is pulses of very high voltage (30-50kv methinks) high frequency ac, which would be almost impossible to rectify to charge a tesla coil with it.

But that doesn't mean it is useless, there are all kinds of fun ways to play with a 50kv pulse transformer wink

Iggy coil is slang for ignition coil

i believe these are great for illuminating gaseous tubes though.

Somehow I doubt this thing even approaches the specified 2,875 VA. If it was pulsing at 10Hz, that would be 287.5 J per bang. That would be deafening, not just very loud. Or maybe its just horribly inefficient.

Plus, chances are you have a 20A breaker which would blow at 25A. And if not, the power cord would be VERY warm, if not hot to the touch.

This does not look like it would be usable for a tesla coil, but I'm sure there are tons of other fun uses for it.
