Hi!

I'm building a really small SSTC. I'm gonna the whole with a 9V rechargeable battery. I've tried Steve Ward's Micro circuit so far, but it seems not to work. So what circuit would you suggest for building such small Tesla coil? The Fres of the secondary is something between 5 and 8 MHz. I'm interested in Steve Conner's PLL circuit. Would it work well with this kind of small tesla coil? And is it absolutely necessary to use a GDT for this kind of small voltage design? Can I replace the the gate drive chips with 2N2222/2N2905 totem poles?

Any advice would be great smile

Well.. the power available from 9V is very low, and small coils tend to produce shorter sparks at the same power as bigger ones... SO if you want to get at least small sparks, you'll have to use interrupter with very short ON time and you'll probably need less than 1 primary turn- how to go around this I don't know...

In any case, the sparks will be minimal.

Well, the rechargeable batteries are different. They have a low ESR, and I've been easily able to pull some 2A from such a battery.

i know its 12v driven, but it should also work with 9v
just try

here u see my results at 12v :

Well many thanks mate!
I will give that circuit a try. BTW, how much current does it draw @12V and what are your primary and secondary specs?

Others, your suggestions are still welcome smile

Hmm, what about adding an interrupter to that circuit? How could it be done?
And Lomy, that seems to be a Class-E coil, or am I wrong?
I haven't found much information for tuning the class e capacitor. Are there any simple rules of thumb or formulas to tune the capacitor?
And bd139 and bd140 can be replaced with 2n2222 and 2n2905?

mh first its very very very esay to add an interrupter: see the second gate of the 4093 ? instead of 12v, u use it as interrupter input and it works great. then to tune E-class exactly isnt very easy, but u can test some caps. my coil has an ~2nF cap

-sure i can replace them
