I've had this one in my Favorites for a while, and found myself wondering today how many of you all had seen it. Watch the WHOLE THING, or you're bound to miss out. The middle is particularly worthwhile; the power lines may remain on the pole, but that doesn't mean you're safe!

Ouch. I'd say it doesn't get much worse than this, but fortunately it appears as though nobody was killed.

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

Yes, watched a while ago - I think steve conner posted it.

I don't exactly see how the chamfer got energized?

The guy in comments is saying that 33kV line made a contact with lower voltage line?

I see 2 sites of arcing over there.

I would be so pissed if that was my house at 3:50 in the video.

Im suprised there was anything left of the wires to arc after a few minutes. Arcs at lower voltages (240/600) can burn up buss bar in seconds.

The transfomer likely internally shorted supplying the full primary voltage to the secondary side, thus all the energized wiring in the house was arcing to whatever was nearby (ground)
My guess anyways.

Just wow. That house-shooting-sparks-thing was pretty cool (though must have sucked for the owner).

The worst high voltage accident I've seen was when a squirrel (atleast I think it was a squirrel ill) jumped between two phases on a distribution transformer: Poof!

Squirrels are evil! Not far from where I live, a squirrel knocked out power to about 2,000 people last year when it decided to eat its breakfast on top of a 115kV substation transformer. Impressively, the squirrel managed produce (i.e., become) a ground fault on the HV side. 115kV vs. squirrel = POOF! Amusingly, the power company failed to analyze the situation thoroughly when they arrived, as was later revealed in a press release. They found the charred squirrel and three blown HV fuses. They slapped in new fuses, got ready to go, and flipped the switch. POOF! Two of the three fuses blew again. So it was back to dispatch for more HV fuses. Turns out the ground fault had somehow resulted in a huge spike on the other two phases, activating the lighning arresters and actually causing them to burn short! Which, in turn, resulted in the immediate destruction of two of the new fuses. By the time they'd figured all that out, replaced the bad arresters, and re-replaced two of the three fuses, more than 24 hours had passed.

Never underestimate the power [consumption] of little furry vermin!

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE
