Hello!
I've built the Steve Ward's Micro SSTC circuit (http://www.stevehv.4hv.org/SSTC6/microSSTCschematic.JPG). Two main differences are that I supply the whole thing with a 9V battery pack, and there's no 12v regulator. I powered up the circuit, and the FET started heating. Pushing the button didn't change anything. Then I made some measurements and I noticed that the FET is letting current through all the time. Then I connected the antenna to ground. FET let current through no more. But pushing the button didn't make any change again. I've checked the circuit many times, and everything seems to be OK. So what's wrong?
EDIT: I forget to say that I use MIC4420BN instead of TC4220

Try reversing the phasing on the primary
I would also try using a seperate 9v battery to power the gate driver, and make sure to use plenty of decoupling capacitors on both parts of the circuit. I think that what is happening is that when the irfp460 turns on, it is drawing the battery voltage down, and preventing the circuit from oscillating.
As an aside, I wouldn't expect to get a whole lot of sparks out of a 9v battery, especially with this design. I would recomend at least a 12v gell cell.

Thanks for reply.
My battery pack is actually 8xAA rechargeable NiMH 2500mAh rechargeable batteries. And the fet turns on even with no load.
But now I think I know what my problem is. It may be the push switch that I have in the circuit. It may conduct when it should not (I didn't measure it properly, tried only with 200 ohm scale. It's a really small switch, have been in hard use). So the switch may present in the circuit as a 1k resistor or something. Well, I'm gonna try will changing the switch solve the problem.
EDIT: Replacing the switch didn't solve the problem. Now I'm going to try supplying the gate driver part with a separate battery.
ANOTHER EDIT: Supplying the gate driver with separate battery didn't help. Now I've PM'ed Steve and asked about my problem.

That will work with low voltages and a IRF540? I plan to make one of that but I dont have TC4420, I have only TC4429 (with have a inverted output) can I use it?
