I recently bought a transformer, and to my surprise, it is an autotransformer frown (can't complain too much though, 300VA, 115 to 230V for 1$). My question is, can i still implement this as the power supply in my VTTC? I've used a voltage quadrupler before (unisolated), just making sure to realize that ground really isn't ground on it. My only concern with this one is that there is an audio frequency input - which is connected via a 47k resistor to ground.

Or if anyone would be willing to trade a 115VAC to ~230VAC isolated transformer for an autotransformer wink

I haven't studied your schematic much, but if you replace the standard two-winding transformer symbol with an autotransformer one, then mark all the points you expect to be hot/neutral/ground, I expect any contradictions will present themselves pretty quickly (e.g., like a diode between two same-potential points, or hot/neutral/ground shorts).

It may work.

What tube are you using? The voltage seems on the low side, even after tripling. I assume you're not using a MOT because it would be too HV for your tube, and not because you don't have a MOT. MOTs are easily obtained for $0 in most places, after all...

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

I'm trying to get ~600V, I'm will be using a EL519 or maybe PL519 if i can't find the 6.3V filament version. And yes, a MOT would be a bit overkill for this tube- Its going to be a plasma tweeter, I'm not going for spark length, i'm going for longevity. I guess I just need (isolated) about +600V, +300-350V, and ground of course at around 150VA, and I don't want to have my ground floating if i'm going to connect some audio source to it.

Ok, new plan cheesey I'm winding my own transformer on a ~150VA core, removed the secondary winding, and figured out the plan for a secondary. I'm going to wind 2 separate windings, 245V each. My plan is to connect these in series, use a bridge rectifier with the output fed into 2 series capacitors. My question is, can i tap the connection between the two capacitors to get a 300V source (with the negative end of the bridge grounded), or is there a better way to do this? I'm just debating the best topology to use, I could also use a doubler topology with the windings in parallel and have a 300V source. What do you think the best method is?
