NE555+IRFP240=SSTC Driver (Would this work?)

Hi!

Some time ago I found this kind of circuit http://uzzors2k.googlepages.com/ET_Flyback_basic.gif/ET_Flyback_basic-full.jpg for driving a flyback. But what if I replace the 1nF cap with a 100pF one, the frequency rises ten times bigger, could it then be used as a simple sstc driver? And will IRFP240 work well in this circuit?

Do you think that the 555 timer could drive a fet fast enough? In other words it wouldn't work

In fact the NE555 datasheet says that the chip works at over 500 kHz.

It could drive it fast enough if it could supply enough current to drive it but this isn't the case. This is why we use a powerful gate drive ic.

I would recommend to build a self tuning coil, I tried the 555 approach when I first started to mess around with sstc's. I found out that the easiest way to build a sstc is by using a self tuning circuit like this one, it's really easy to build.

I think the NE555 CAN drive smaller (<2nf) fets at SSTC frequencies. However you would need to run the coil in Class E (resonant capacitor from drain to ground) otherwise you would smoke your fet soon. This requies a bit of tuning and you definately need a scope to get it working properly.

Thanks for replies. I think I will be aiming towards the Steve's Micro SSTC circuit. However, my local electronics supplier doesn't have tc4420 drivers. So which driver should I try?
