Given the form factor, I bet what you have there is a spiral line generator not a Blumlein. This is sometimes referred to as a "Fitch" generator. See "High Power Electronics" by Sarjeant and Dollinger for a brief write up. Alternatively, there are some old IEE papers by Fitch floating about that go into greater detail. Also see US Patent #s 3289015 and 4140917.

I was also in doubts, seeing those pictures. The blumlein seems to be a big construction... How much energy you can store in a piece of coax cable which would fit inside the posted package?

BTW our roentgen at work (Pantax) I'm using routinely has an oil filled CW multiplier powered by 15Khz HV transformer... The final setting I use is 150KV 15mA but I'm sure it can go higher. I have the full documentation provided for the service - if anyone interested I can scan and send the schemes and construction details...

In any case, that is one of more esoteric pieces of technology I've seen.

In what crazy means they get better energy density with this, than with marx generator?

Is it all just about switching? What is used as a switch in that thing?

I stand corrected then!
That certainly is an interesting piece of kit!

Those x-ray tubes by the way, take very impressive x-rays, on account of their penetrating power, and small anode size. I have been using marx driven FXR tubes for some time now, as opposed to coolidge, and for the things I x-ray, I find them superior in every respect!
The heat production is almost insignificant, and the good design of the tube significantly reduces the chances of flashover, meaning no need for gallons of mineral oil !
I really cant understand why these never really caught on in hospitals, and industry in general!

Hmm. Can someone please tell me if a Polaroid (tm) colour film is any good for detecting X-rays?

I have five films left in this camera, they do eventually develop after 5 minutes but are a little fuzzy.

Was looking into removing films under low light via night vision viewer, and then exposing them to HV/etc or X-rays (the former I have done successfully with monochrome films with expiry date of around 2003)

regards, -A

Yes and very well in fact, I have tried it myself with excellent results.
The trick is to cover the lens of the camera, with black tape, and press the button, as if you are taking a photo normally. The camera will spit out the film, which takes 5 min or so to develop. Since it will turn out black as the lens was covered, you place the film under your x-ray machine and whilst it is still developing expose the film (it is still x-ray sensitive during developing!) It sounds a little backwards, but it works extraordinarily well !

see this link: Link2

My polaroids are on this page: Link2

Note the odd colours in the prints, this is due in part to reciprocity failure of the film due to the extremely long exposure time (compared to its intended use)

Leslie, your web page is beautiful... Would it be possible to open a whole new thread dedicated to these techniques? I would have a few questions about doses, energy (voltage) and filters you use and I'm sure not alone.
Thanks Mates

Thanks, I`m glad you like it!
Yes sure, we could start a thread in the Electromagnetic-radiation forum all about it if you like, I`ll be glad to answer any questions!

I’m not sure whether Electromagnetic radiation is the right forum for X-rays (I would place the thread rather into HV forum, considering that X-rays are photons emitted from an anode bombarded by electrons accelerated by HV DC in the vacuum - or am I wrong?). But, that’s not so important. I’ll be very pleased to have the possibility discussing the X-rays anywhere…However I would prefer you to start the thread with some of your nice pictures, basic theory and a link to your site (I hope I do not want too much rolleyes )

Thanks,
Mates
