I've drained the tank into a sealed container & found the tank is weeping a small amount of oil from the lower seam. I work in an auto dealer & I'm going to have one of the bodyshop guys refinish the tank (looks like crap, several dents & lousy paint). I want to seal the joint where the side & bottom meet. What do you suggest using that will not contaiminate the oil.

When I frist got this transformer, I checked & saw the oil level was up over the top of the transformer, but not up to the level of the cups where the HV leeds plug in. Am I wrong to assume the the level should at least cover the HV connections at the bottom of the cups?

Thanks,
bob

Can you just weld the seam shut? I may be misunderstanding...

Regarding where the oil level should be: It's usually just under the bottom of the low-voltage bushings. If it were above them, then the seals on the bushings would have to be real good or else the oil would just leak out. So stop an inch or so short of the low-voltage bushings. They should remain dry. Since you're asking, I assume there isn't a fill indicator embossed on the inside of the can ...? A lot of pole pig cans have those (that's what we're talking about here, yes?)

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

H J,
I guess it could be welded, but that might be difficult to do while reaching down to the bottom of the tank. I was thinking it might be easier to just place a bead of sealer. Maybe the RTV silicone used to seal fish tanks, as that stuff doesn't use citric acid & won't leach anything into the water.

Why reach down to the bottom? Just weld it from the outside. That's what I'd do, anyway.

No idea how the silicone would stand up to the oil. A few years back, a guy named Dave Leddon built a clear acrylic tank for his pole pig. Called it the "Visible Pig" project. It looked real spiffy! He would have had to conquer this problem as well, although it may be that he used some kind of acrylic solvent. His links all seem to be broken now, unfortunately, and Google isn't helping.

EDIT: And... DUH! ... 4HV's own Christopher Hooper--a.k.a. "Plastic Guy"--has built plastic tanks for oil-immersed MOT stacks. If he doesn't chime in, you might PM him and see what he thinks about various sealers and their fitness for oil retension.

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE
