Did anyone notice a slowdown of 4HV a few hours ago? Got about 15,000 hits from Digg in a few hours. They were complaining my site was down for a while and were using a Digg mirror site.

It is still dragging a little. Unfortunately many digg users are not very considerate, and hammer your site repeatedly with "web accelerators" that open 50 connections at once, or attempt to download your entire site. After tackling some of the worst offenders, the problem seems to be minimal.

It is quite common that servers and ISPs throttle the connections so by downloading on several connections it is possible to get significantly higher download speeds.
And yes 4hv was at times not reachable at all from here.

Other people just take the ricer approach to browser speed, and modify their registries to allow IE to fire off 10, 20, or 50 connections at a time, regardless of whether it actually helps or not. A few users actually had over 100 parallel connections going at once -- from a dialup connection, no less -- which ties up a lot of resources. Those 100 slots could serve 50 people with reasonable browser settings. When hundreds of users are viewing the site every few minutes, it only takes a few inconsiderate people to throw a wrench in the works.
Fortunately, all it took was to start dropping the packets of a handful of the worst offenders, and everything seemed to perk right back up.
