the probability of you having no problems is slim to none but a designe that has been used successfully over and over is Steav Ward's DRSSTC 3 Link2

also you will have to spend money to make the initial investment, costing you about $200-$500 to build a reliable and good looking one. If you can go with junkyard parts then reliability falls and you will be spending more in the long run but you could build it for less than $200.

good luck,

Danielle

If you cant get a SSTC to work reliably, then you need to go and figure out what the problem is. Just moving on to a more advanced project isnt likely to work any better.

I've never tried building a DRSSTC before...and it does look very cool. Hey, I wonder how one would increase the current draw from the mains and larger sparks --- is it simply getting a larger IGBT / primary capacitor??

sory, i don't blow mosfets, whey just break, and make short circuit,(3 times they blows cheesey )
But whay they go off ? driving is very good, have GS protection (13V zeners), have overvoltage protection , and good heatsin...they are "eating" 3-4A, and 800W (220V AC)
here is my sstc GDT connected direct to transistors, without 12 om rezistor, and with 20nF load, usually my mosfets is 2*4nF :)

It's a matter of keeping in resonance, your fixed frequency oscillator can't keep in tune when you detune the coil (which happens all the time.) so the mosfets have to switch reactive current and die. Switch to a resonant driver.
