Hiya, I was thinking of trying out something sstc-flavour, and not too big or complicated to begin with! Lots of people seem to have pretty good results with IRFP460 mosfets (230v mains here) but I've been searching around and nowhere seems to have any :(
The mailorder place here used to have them for about $6each which wasn't too bad, but now they're up to $50 with an unspecified order time, which doesn't fill me with confidence. And Mr Digikey and so on still have some, but will charge me about $75 shipping cos I think that's their standard rate to discourage people from ordering from places that they don't know where they are. Like NZ.
Anyway, it doesn't look like I'll be able to get hold of any of the 460s. I have 2, but I didn't want to start building something and then have them explode and not be able to get any spare ones cos that would, you know, suck too. Are there any other ok mosfets I could look for instead? From some trawling the Inter Web I wondered if these might work?

When I purchased from Digikey, they charged me ~US$39 for shipping and US$6 international order processing fee. The shipping was so high because my (large) package had some big component kits in them.

Hi, Your location isn't filled out so its hard to know where you are from, but ill assume its New Zealand, if so you can get a few IRFP460's from here. Im not sure if they a suitable or not being a different case style?. Good luck.

Ok, I started a thread related to this in General Science, but i'll ask here as well. Is this a good FET to replace the IRFP460? I've found a lot of different 460s with different end letters and prices, anyone know the difference? And why do people only pay$6 for theirs when the cheapest I've found is $14Aus?

People in the US seem to get their IRFP460s for next to nothing... Newark has them for around 3$, but the cheapest I can get from a "real" supplier in Finland are 7€. From Farnell I can get them for 14€ a piece which is way too much considering they'll probably suffer a horrible fiery death .
Ebay is the way to go, but unfortunately I can't use it. If I order from the US I can get them for a decent price, but then theres shipping and handling costs that take the cheap out of them .
This is why I'm limited to irfp450s in my Mark II coil. Got a deal of 3€/pop for the 450s a while ago. Too bad they are 0.45R devices, so dissipation is a bit of a problem. They seem happy enough on a CPU heatsink, though.
Almost any 500V (or 400V) fet with 20A current capability and RDSon of 0.27R does the job. Or IRFP450s, if you don't mind the decreased current capability and increased dissipation. The FET you linked to seems pretty much ideal . Bit high gate capacitance, but not a problem at lower frequencies (<500kHz)
