could you expand electro?

I tried .5 pencil lead, with a 9v nattery it gets hot, with two 9v in parrallel, it glows orange and starts spewing white smoke. Is this smoke dangerous? if not if i do it in the combustion chamber, would the smoke leave a residue or would it blow apart from the hydrogen xplosion?

The smoke should be wax/lubrication from the manufacturing process. It should not be dangerous in small amounts like this but it is always a good idea not to breathe more smoke than you have to, no matter what the content is. It should stop smoking after all the volatile content is evaporated and only the graphite is remaining.

I think that Electroholic is thinking about making a triggered spark gap.

Yes, use the bbq igniter to initialize the plasma channel, and let the cap supply the power.
that should give you some really nice fat powerful sparks

why not put the bbq igniter, spark gap and a photoflash cap in parallel?

To all my understanding, the parallel low voltage cap is going to short out the high voltage.

You would need something like a big HV diode or inductor in series with cap in order to provide enough impedance for HV to create a spark.

For the inductor you'd need fast rise time of your high voltage pulse, from a bottle cap or etc.

Inductor carries a lot of current though.

You can also use a pilot HV transformer in series with bulk cap, but then it also needs to carry all the current.

I might try some of those methods to see how they work.

I did try it, and it did not spark until i took off the cap, thx for explanation marko, the only part i under stood was the voltage spike and diode. Was thinking of using diode. Can you explain the inductor method?

it won't happen if you use a 3 electrode gap, trigatron or whatever they are called
something like this

i got it to work :) and sprisingly powerful for size. will it be worth it to drill small holes as stress relief on tank/barrel for longer life of parts in terms of power?

im using a stainless steel barrel (very thin) that i got of a mechanical pencil and a small BB container (medium thinkness plastic) as combustion chamber.

i tried that once, after my coilgun got powerful enough to weld switches together, and it only ever sparked to 1 electrode. now i just put pennies in alligator clips and touch 'em together. boom! maybe i should try again.
