Li-Ion and Li-Pol simply stop functioning correctly outside their temperature ranges.

Most Li based packs die within 1 year if you leave the laptop on charge all the time when the battery is full (charge cycles weaken the cells.) If it is still under warranty send it back for a new one. It is also sometimes a good idea to get a sick battery off e-bay to use when plugged in as a desktop replacement. Better yet, get the extra 12 cell pack for $120 when you buy a new laptop.

Extreme cold essentially slows the internal chemistry of most batteries, and for some cells like lead-acid damage can occur. Yet for non-rechargeable dry cells it is the best storage conditions. Note the Li-Pol ideal range is not published clearly, as one will see significant performance loss under 10'C and over 32'C.

Up north one may still need to warm up a cellphone before it will function. wink

Hi.
I can confirm three different failure modes for notebook packs.
1) The imbalanced cell problem.
This occurs when one cell becomes weak before the rest, resulting in loss of apparent capacity. The charge monitor may falsely indicate a full charge resulting in even more capacity loss (effectively it narrows the "useful window") and this can eventually lead to 2)

2) The "shorted cell" problem.
Eventually one or more cells or cell blocks (two or more cells in parallel) fails short due to overdischarge. Even Li-Ion cells suffer from this problem, causing total pack failure.

3) The "open cell" problem.
Sometimes one or more cells build up internal pressure, opening the failsafe vent. This safety mechanism stops any further charge/discharge, and can cause a sudden capacity loss in the pack as the remaining cells become unbalanced (its like putting an AA and a D cell in series!)

I've taken apart a few notebook packs and the failure mode 1) can be fixed temporarily by rebalancing the cells but it will not last long as normally the damage is done.

Hope this helps, -A

It's no longer under warranty, its over 2 yrs old so I guess its time has come.

However I noticed a weird thing, the batt. now lasts some 15mins in Win but over 45mins in bios and the cell voltage indicators go mad (the voltage goes down then up then slowly down). I tried discharging and recharging it a few times, didn't help much.
