A lot have tryed that 555 + BJT kind of driver. Some time back i gave it a try and it works but at a really low power.
So one of these days i had nothing better to do so i went to make a better driver for a coil i had laying around. I think pulsing a small cap in to it would be more up to the job. Then stuck on some 25A SCRs i had laying around. Some tinkering later the coil had a nice output(Enough arc over the coil with no problem) I got about 4cm arcs from it.
Its not a very smart circuit tho since if both SCRr conduct at the same time it will get stuck in a short circuit over the supply. This state happens if they are switched too fast. But they cant even handle 1Khz and a ignition coil can do a lot more.So im trying to figure out how to switch faster without screwing it up.
Then i also had a idea to try and put a small coil on it and see if it works for induction heating. The coil was about 5 turns of thick wire. Then trying to put some scissors in to it and they got relay hot in a few seconds, it also melted solder. The fire rate of the SCRs could be picked up well above 1Khz in this setup tho.

Nice sparks. Though similar ones could be achieved by the classic dimmer driver, I think.

Oh and the heatsinks are probably not even needed since the SCRs don't even get warm, but they are there just in case i did something to overheat them.
Also i have searched the web a lot and couldn't find anything that looks like my circuit. I was hopeing on finding ways to improve it. So dose anyone have ideas how to do so. Mainly interested in a way to raise the switching frequency. When the coil has no load its pretty low, way lower than i want it.
Almost forgot the SCRs are 2N6509
