If it is a classic SSTC driver, I would use mosfets. Switching times are much less than most IGBT's, and you will lower the losses due to switching transitions. I believe Steve has played around with some 80N50 MOSFETS that have held up through a lot of abuse, if you're going with a high budget, i'd consider getting some of these.

MOSFET drive waveforms are similar for both turn-on and turn-off. IGBT's have a tail current during shut-off you need to be aware of. You really only need to start thinking about IGBT's once you move into the realm of higher voltages and more throughput.

Is it not the case that at high currents the on-resistance of the MOSFET drain-source channel becomes significant in dissipating power (for increasing current, I^2R losses), while an IGBT has a fairly fixed VCE (3V approx.) and so the power dissipation is lower at these conditions? I guess this only really comes into play with DRSSTCs?

Universal driver = sucks over a bigger range.
Design for an application... make up your mind already and just build it. Its stupid to use big IGBTs for a little coil that runs at high frequencies, likewise, dont use wimpy fets on a monster coil.
Now, if what you really sort of meant was "i want a SSTC driver for 100-2000W of power at < 250khz" then that is a perfectly good design criteria. But, if its more like "i dunno if i will drive a coil at 100khz or 1Mhz", then there really isnt going to be a solution that works great for both cases.
I too suggest MOSFETs if you are doing regular SSTC type stuff. Depending on your line voltage (120V or 240V) the IRFP260 and IRFP460 are pretty standard parts.
