Hi people,
For those of you having troubles to get material for primary (my case) I just developed a way of producing very cheap and quite effective primaries. It is based on Alu foil (the fat one for grilling) which is firstly wrinkled and than rolled between your hands (the fat alu-foil is not fragile so it can be done very easily). You can get almost any length (limited by the total lenght of the foil) and the surface of such conductor is huge (I guess the skin effect must be very low). Next advantage is that it is not isolated (like most of the wires you can get for this purpose) which alows easy tuning...

I tested it on my coil and works well...

Cheers Mates

Creative, but it seems like a lot of work. I would have opted for an old cord off a lamp or something. But I like the way you think. cheesey How did you end up making connections to the foil (tap and end) since it has such a rough surface?

I made an Al foil high-skin conductor using layers of kitchen Al and polyethylene foil rolled together and twisted. There needs to be insulation between AL foil layers in order to get all skin out of it.

Still I don't think it's good for anything but special applications... at currents we generally use with SSTC's we don't generally need an overkill like such.

You might try including the PE foil also.

OK, I tried new one (needed higher coupling). The total time for making the primary aprox. 10min including the winding... For holding the primary on the tube I'm using the hot glue pistol...

Pictures with details

BTW: The lamp is powered wire-less from the coil

"Ghetto" - that's cool description for all my HV stuff. Maybe I take it as a new nickname... shades

Here is one more pic after litle bit of tuning...(Device: single IGBT class E coil - power consuption 350W)
