I am planing to get a D40x for 750$ or a D80 for 1350$. Dose anybody think the D80 is worth the extra cash. I plan to take picturs of tesla action, PCB's, macro shots and genral scenery The image quality is identical for all practical purposes.
The D80 has three main advantages: It has wireless control over external flashes. It has a built in focus motor so it can use all types of lenses. It has a larger and brighter viewfinder that makes it much more comfortable to use. All of these can be a big deal and easily make it worth the price, that depends on the usage.
The D40x has no significant advantages and most people would be much better off with a D40 and spending the extra money on an external flash or more/better lenses. The resolution difference is insignificant for almost all uses. The D40 with higher quality optics will always take better pictures than a D40x. Good optics will also be good 20 years after the camera has been replaced.
It is also important to hold each camera in your hand before buying. A camera that is less comfortable is a camera less used.
You must also budget for the correct lenses, there is no single lense that is good at everything.
