HHDRSSTC

Okay I decided to keep up the tradition with HHDRSSTC (Hand Held Double Resonant Solid State Tesla Coil) I even considered adding in a BO somewhere for Battery Operated..

Ive created a web page for it here.

Im happy to answer any questions.. I still need to tune it properly and probably build a new primary with higher? coupling.. It worked considerably better in testing on my desk. Sparks are about 8" max at the moment. There is also a bug I need to work out where if I lift it off the ground the dc-dc converter shuts down.. Probably something to do with shielding or grounding..

I should really hook up my audio interrupter to it also and have it play some electronic gun tones.. I wonder if I can find one of those old toys where the lights flashed and made decending tones and things..

Oh and there is a connection from the base of the secondary that goes to a 2' x 3' steel plate on the ground.. I'm looking into a metal plate on my shoe but don't think its really safe ;) maybe one on each foot, and then no jumping in the air.

Cheers,
Chester

Chester -

On your inverter schematic, you note that the transformer core consists of a pair of toroids, type "E87" material. I can't seem to find any references to an "E87" ferrite composition, although Epcos lists a type N87.

Can you provide any more info on these toroids? I'd just like to look at the permeability curves for the material that you used.

Yeah its an epcos toroid, it must be N87.. I just said E87 from memory as Ive had these for a few years.. I dont think the material is too critical though.. just get a power material with low losses around 50khz and you should be good..

I was wondering about the secondary grounding. seems like it wouldn't work without it.

You can sort of see the black wire coming from the base of the secondary, this is connected to a steel plate on the ground and effectively grounds it.. It would really be fun in a metal suit as then you wouldn't have to worry about grounding.. could just connect it to your suit.. through a plate on the handle or some such.
