Hi all,
I have taken delivery of a 1m length of plexi tube 150mm diameter. I usually go for a 5:1 ratio making 750mm.
I am wondering going for longer will really hurt performance? I am thinking the benefits of the topload being further from primary will outway the small coupling loss (coupling being so high anyway)
Aside from aesthetics can anyone think of another reason not to go for this?

Hey, your topload is an unshorted coil, so it's going to be just a part of secondary coil - really nothing to worry about
Regarding form factor, I don't see why not go for it - it will give you larger manageable spark.
Steve's big DRSSTC seemed to be just about that...
You may actually want to reduce the coupling much more later because of flashower, and it may actually be wise to leave some more initial free space between winding and the bottom of the form...

My big coil is ~1:5.5, so of course i dont see any problem with this .
I still occasionally get the nasty spark that jumps across the entire surface of the coil... a bit too much voltage me thinks. I really dont think i would go past a 1:6 ratio though, since wider coils are really better.
