Ok, so now that I understand how the bridge works, I have one more question before I box this thing up.

I want to add a switch to run the coil CW for short periods, and have found that by shorting the timing capacitor on the 555 it will output a constant HIGH to the UCC enable pins, thus running CW. Is this safe? The 12V regulator only gets a bit warmer than usual, and my 555 still works, but I want to make sure this isn't going to damage anything.

A better way to do that is to couple the 555 to the enable pins of the UCC chips through a 1K resistor or so, and then you can bridge the enables to +ve. This means you just load the 555 output with 1K, when bridged.

Its funny you should mention that about the 1k resistor, because when I first tried running CW I just soldered UCC pin3 to +12...bad idea. I blew a 555 and a 12V reg. It think I will use your suggestion when it finally goes together. Thanks.

If you want to run CW I suggest you a start-up oscillator. Without it the coil can lose feedback and theres nothing to kick it back to oscillation.

I only planned to run CW for short periods, probably 15 seconds or less; my gate drivers and 12V reg are not heatsinked (heatsunk?) well enough to run CW for long periods.
