I was home again today and able to work more on my HV stuff. I went ahead to see if higher voltages and currents had much of an effect on the arc and found somthing a little strange. The outer end of the arc lead the inner end by quite a bit once I moved the 2 rings apart. It caused a kind of "swooping" shaped arc visible in the movies and a little bit in the image below. I also noticed that the slower the arc spun the more likely it was to stick or jump to another place but this may have to do with imperfections in the metal rings.
Hi guys. I have a question - what determines the spin direction ?. I've experimented with an AC flyback and a 30Kv diode and i found out that in the one polarity the spark stays at one place and in the other polarity it spins nicely.

The left (or right hand, depends where you come from) rule determines the spin direction based on the current direction and the magnetic field polarity.
