I used my super scientific sealing compound (water on the lip of the bowl). I will get a strip of rubber or maybe try grease (but I'de rather it not be flammable).

Dow Corning Silohexane vacuum grease is good stuff. It comes in a big tube like toothpaste, and its pretty useful stuff.
I just got one of my Welch 1400's rebuilt which cost $500. That is expensive, but the pump new is $1600, so if you're looking for a pump you could probably get one and have it rebuilt for half that cost. OR you can save up and do the smart thing, if you want a good pump, and buy a modern direct-drive pump that will last a long time.

I set up again but this time with a 15kv NST. The bowl is connected to one side and the wire in the middle is connected to the other side of the transformer. As the pressure drops you can see the wire glow a little and spark to the bowl before striking an arc. The shortest distance to the bowl from the wire is 2 3/4 inches and the arc draws itself out to a max length of 4 1/2 inches. You can also see the water around the edge of the bowl bubbling.
