How do you clean the black residue that accumulates on the brass spark gap where it fires?

I don't work much with Brass, but I would try dilute HCL ( because HCL will dissolve surface oxides of copper but not the copper) or CLR.

I tried sandpaper, its a bitch
I happen to have some HCL on me though. Well, not on me that would be weird But in the closet
