So the story carries on… I performed new set of experiments with the spark gap. I used the UVB lamp like before and as next light source the same sized tube called the Black light. There is a big price difference between the two tubes (I guess the UVB glass is quartz. BTW normal glass blocks quite effectively all UV light below 400nm that’s a message for Bored chemist). The black light is still pretty low (UVA category - peaks around 400nm) but that’s the only normal-like tube I have at home. I tried the same experiment like I posted some time ago, but I made small changes on my HV source; I’m using IGBT transistor (BUP314) and new motor cap 60uF made by Ducati which increased the power a lot.
I could easily achieve fast controlled triggering with the UVB tube, but with UVA tube I had major problems. There was impossible to find the distance between the electrodes to avoid spontaneous triggering and controled triggering in the same time. However I could trigger the spark gap also with this type of light (after first triggering events the spark gap always started automatic regime and I lost further control).
I have new theory regarding how the whole thing could work. I think that glass is changing the conductivity while is exposed to UV light. Simply it kicks out some extra electrons on the surface of the tube. However I have to admit that the E field plays also important role. But make your own opinion about the whole thing; better perform your own experiments!
Here are few photos of the tubes and the whole assembly. During the day I’ll also post the movies - mainly the spontaneus triggering regime looks impressive!
