Dont know if anyone is still watching this thread but I'll make a few comments...

In order to match muzzle energy of 0.22 rimfire cartridge which is, according to wikipedia, 135J, you require something like 3kj cap bank which is size of a small desk and by no means portable.

135J isnt to much for a handheld coilgun IMO. I am working on a similar project myself. Its the velocity that is really going to get you. In my last IL my projectile hit 127J KE and thats without any real tuning and about 1/2 the energy of my cap bank. Sure my cap back is big, but no where near the size of a desk. And if thats all the energy I needed I could reduce it in half - shoe box sized maybe. Or even smaller if you are buying high end caps and not $4 ebay specials. wink The induction launcher style seems much easier to get higher power and faster velocites with a lot less control (meaning timing doesnt have to be precise, etc.). The problem with IL's is the easy way of doing it uses a flat pancake coil and similarly sized flat disk. Not very aerodynamic at all and difficult to use with a barrel. Other than the site linked already I havent seen many multi stage IL's. Thats something I will experiment with hopefully in the next year. Until then the single stage ones seem to work great if you can build a coil and housing to stand up to over a kilo-joule. And it wont be really small by any means. But perhaps sci-fi huge riffle like, something along the lines of the BFG in doom:

Doom The Rock

At least thats my goal to fit a high power induction riffle into something similarly shaped and sized, but my goal is something along the lines of 500fps+ but with a much larger aluminum slug.

I've got some good ideas I think and I will hopefully be working on them over winter. So I dont have anything really great as of yet. The biggest problem I will have that I see is getting a portable power supply for multi-kJ coilgun. I have to do some more searching in the past to find some schematics, since rules state you cant just ask for such. I suppose they'd rather you re-invent the wheel. But until I can come up with some kind of super duper boost converter or zvs or whatever they are called I am just going to use a small lead acid battery or gel cell and an auto 12VDC to 120VAC inverter. That would be the large and heavy way of doing it unfortunately, and with a portable gun, size and weight of course is of the utmost importance.
