I've got everything I need, except for a power supply, a perf-board to get the dang thing neatened up, and a project box to put it in. I'm thinking a 12v wall-wart for the PS, but I can't seem to find an extra one. Maybe I'll find a couple of lantern batteries lying around....

See that knotted mess in the first pic? that's the circuit, and now you see why I need a perf-board really badly. :P

The flyback/ignition coil drivers using the 2n3055 transistor are floating around for many years, still using the same crappy transistor! They really should replace it with something better, nowadays there are transistors that will do the job 10 times better and are cheaper! (irf630, etc.).

Sorry I could not resist, every time I see a 2N3055 I must smile cheesey It was designed as linear regulator, it's not a HF switching transistor...

No offence intended, just play around with the circuit, observe it's performance, and replace the transistor. smile

Looking forward for the results,
J.M.

Buy a breadboard while you're at it, it makes prototyping a dream.

uzzors, there is a reason ppl use 2N3055, its cheap and readily available.
But yea i´d rather use lets say IRFP450, but with an iggy coil a high voltage igbt is also a good choice.

well, I don;t exactly have anything close to a budget, 6.50 a week isn't the shortest way to throw together $50 for an iggy coil driver, I didn't even have enough for the project box :\ I need bigger allowance.. or more patience. I just threw together a coil gun today, and I still feel like throwing together a rail gun and a ton of other stuff.... but I don't have any of the cash to do it with...

You can't make everything you think of just get used to it. Or just save some money for one big project and do that one with a large budget.
