Depending on the design and requirements, there is a LOT of inductance there by doing that. Probably wouldn't be the best for high current full-bridges.

i already used this technique in some of my smaller sstcs and it seems to work without problems. of cource, inductance is a problem making the fets start ringing on power on, . with lower power sstcs that should be no problem but if you want to build a drsstc or a higher power sstc i would stay away from these connectors.

Would adding a ferrite bead not accomplish exactly the opposite of keeping the leads short? As I understand, adding a high permeability material will increase the inductance by 100 or so, which is the last thing you want, isn't it?

It's not going to be used for major current, so I think it should be ok. The only other option is to bend the legs of the IGBT's to a right angle, then mount the diodes behind them on the pcb. Makes heatsinking them a pain in the neck. And no, I'm not man enough to build an SSTC that needs no heatsink on the diodes. Yet.
