I don't know about you, but power wastage aside, I'd be alot more inclined to turn off my computer when I go away from it if it didn't take so dang long to power down and boot up again. I'm just running a default kubuntu setup right now-- which is far from ideal, I'm sure, but does anyone have some tips to speed up the boot that won't cause it to bog down too much starting programs? I think bjorn mentioned something about this vis a vis battery life in the one-laptop-per-child discussion a while back, using it as rational to not pick linux for that sort of app. This has also been given to me as a reason to switch to Gentoo, but I don't think I'm ready for anything that drastic... and from what I've seen, the improvement seems marginal anyway.

There are threads on the Ubuntu forums about speeding up the boot process, it involves turning off services and starting X earlier, for the most part. Depending on how things are set up, you might be able to speed things up a lot. Alternate boot methods are more dangerous, but some allow you to start certain things up in parallel.
Compiling a new kernel without all of the extra crap that the default one has may also help.

Boot time is entirely based on what the system is trying to start up between when you power it on and it gives you the logon prompt. I used Slackware and now Gentoo specifically because it would only run what I installed on the system. Removing/disabling unused services is the best way to improve both start-up times and general system performance (especially in Windows). Just be sure the service you want to kill is really "unused". ;)
