Now I need to hear some opinions...

Link2

Peruvian scientists confirmed that there had indeed been a meteorite strike, but no further information on the cause of the illnesses was known

The local townspeople and villagers reported that the illnesses began after they touched the glowing meteor rock, believing it to be of monetary value.

Government officials also specifically asked people to avoid the "glowing object" in the crater.

Sounds so familiar, and yet

Scientists have ruled out radiation at this point.

I wonder how well is this going to be investigated. I already sniff enormous conspiracy and UFO theories in the air.

yeah, an extraterrestrical lifeform caused those people to get ill lol
here in germany it was in the news and there was not a single word about people who got sick. they reported about a stinky meteorite caused by sulfur and methane or so

I vote for Russian military satellite with a huge plutonium RTG, and never mind the reports ruling out radiation.

It sounds like the by-product of several things. There is the chance it could just be coincedence. It can't be too unlikely that a fairly large number of people fall ill at the same time - it will happen occasionally. Add in a sizable meteor strike that roughly coincides, and then it becomes curious.

Couple that with some over excitable journalists and some tinfoil hatters to misinterpret what they write, and then it gets blown up as "sinister".

Not saying it for certain, but things like that have happened before. In this case, it looks like it's possibly true, as the explanation given is fairly consistent, and just about believable.

I think it was just an unfortunate result of the emptying of the international space station septic tank.

Psychosomatic illness (like an aircraft full of "sick" passengers with nothing more than contagious paranoia) explains a lot neatly. =P

It says that "boiling water started coming out of the crater"
And we have a large pool of fetted, standing water in the crater... so, what if it hit a pocket of sulphurous or otherwise contaminated groundwater? I don't know what the geology of the area is like to say what nasty things might have bubbled up to make people cough...
and then past the coughing, we could have a psychosomatic effect. But I don't think we should totally discount the eyewitness report. Underground springs and such have been known to contain cyanide among other nasty things, and after that, standing water = disease in most parts of the world...
