Ohhh my lord no computer graphics or digital tricks it's awesome. I love Rube Goldberg contraptions.

EDIT: I'm a bit skeptic about the fact that they didn't use any computer graphics or digital tricks. Did you see the speakers at the end of the clip and the sparks at the battery contacts?

If by the speakers you mean, the fact that the 8" speakers had nice amount of excursion, It would surprise me that they would come out that far, since Car audio is becoming a VERY popular "click", hell some of the new Pontiac's (I think) have Rockford Fosgate speakers in them and they have a a good 3\4" excursion (The distance that the cone and ring move forward and backward producing more bass), and for the sparks off the battery, apparently you've never worked on a car battery, which if directly shorted from pos-neg is completely capable of destroying a screwdriver. This is all of course if you say that they are using CG or tricks to do the two effects you are referring to, and yes goldberg machines are great. Sorry for the blathering.=)

Quality is quite poor, some parts look to me much more like they are all CGI.

And speakers hop too much indeed, they look verry CGI.

This is actually a pretty old advert these days. It's neat, but I must correct you on a few points. This information is largely from a program on TV adverts a year or so back.

It didn't happen in all in one take. The room they had was too small, so there are some breaks in it (like when the oval exhaust is rollig for example) where a little editing was required to blend the changes.
However, had there been a room long enough, it would have worked almost exactly as you see it. And there really is no CG edits, as the speakers were run on a higher power amplifier than normal to make them move more.

Does that make it clear?

EDIT: I do know what car batteries are capable of. I just wanted to point out that the spark doest look very realistic although it could be due to the bad quality of the video.

its computer animated, and thats for sure. i think 3/4 of the whole track is animated by some software programm or motion capturing. look at all the metal parts and especially on the glasses... i work with a program called 3ds max for some years now and i recognize a animation, when i see one.
so im very very sceptic that the whole video is just "real" look at the parquet. ok the quality is very poor but it still looks very synthetic

I saw this a couple years ago, and got in the same argument then. What threw me then was all the specular reflections-- animation guys love to make everything shiny and show off what their raytracers can do, that's a big part of what I think gives it the 3DsMax feel. But it could also just be that Honda polished the shit out of everything.
(shrugs) It looks less CG'd with a high-quality video.

and if they had done it in 3D, they'd have probably used a real man's program, like Maya

@Reaching: If it was CG, I think they would have claimed it at the time. I mean, what gain is there from claiming it was all done as a giant Rube Goldberg machine, then continually sending your design crew out to TV interviews to say this, when they could have said: "Hey, look at our cool CG tech. Isn't it great?"
But the deal breaker is that you can see partial reflections of the production crew in a couple of the components along the way, the videos of it in production, and some outtakes where it goes wrong which they reel out for these ad shows.

Trust me, I've seen all of this stuff full screen on a high quality 32" widescreen TV, starting with a very skeptical attitude, but seeing it all at that size, I was totally convinced. In fact, I had it taped, and watched it 4 times trying to prove my point. Suffice to say I couldn't.

Believe what you will, but I can see no reason why Honda would reel off a story like that if it were CG when all it would take is for one of the CG animation team to pipe up in the newspapers about it for them to have an honest reputation destroyed.

Based on those solid facts, and a rigorous viewing of the ad at large size, I assure you it is all genuine.
